Capelinhos Volcano located on tip of Faial Island is the only volcano in the world to have been photographed, filmed, observed, & studied while it erupted until it became dormant starting in 1957. The eruption lasted 13 months displacing almost 50% of the island population as the volcano spewed steam, lava, rocks and ashes several miles in the air burying entire homes. The lighthouse operator had a front row seat as he refused to abandon his post to keep the lighthouse operational as long as possible for the safety of mariners while this 2 mile crater rose from the ocean. There is an epic underground museum that I had no clue existed until I went down the stairs and through the doors to reveal what looks like a superheroes hideout.  Awarded Best European Museum of 2012 ??
